Description of the Big Beef tomato variety
The hybrid tomato variety Big Beef F1 belongs to the beefsteak group - they are grown for cooking, including hamburgers. In the description they have large-sized fruits with high taste. These tomatoes are characterized by a medium-early ripening period and can be consumed approximately 100 days after sowing.
Attention! The Big Beef hybrid produced tomatoes weighing up to 2 kg, but this was ensured by maximum removal of ovaries on the bush.
The Big Beef tomato variety is indeterminate; the bush reaches a height of 2 m. It is formed, as a rule, into one stem, secured to a trellis and pinched. The brush bears up to 5 fruits. In open ground, Big Beef tomatoes are grown in the southern regions; in colder climates, planting in greenhouses is necessary. The variety is quite frost-resistant.
Description of fruits
Green fruits acquire a rich red color when ripe. Big Beef tomatoes are round with a smooth surface. The taste is excellent, sweet with a slight sourness. The pulp is juicy, fleshy structure, inside 6 chambers with seeds. The dry matter concentration is defined as high. The weight of the fruit is about 500 g, tomatoes weighing 800 g are also not uncommon.
Reviews from gardeners
Beef tomatoes require constant care, so not all gardeners, especially beginners, dare to grow them . But those who have already tried it are satisfied with the result.
Anna, Davydovka village, Voronezh region. : “I’ve been eyeing this Dutch miracle for a long time and last year I decided to plant several bushes in the greenhouse. The germination of the seeds is excellent, the sprouts hatched after 4 days. Fruiting is abundant, the tomatoes are large, juicy and aromatic. I once tried to grow it in open ground, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. The summer turned out to be rainy and cold. The bushes were affected by late blight and had to be dug up and burned.”
Victor, Gukovo, Rostov region. : “I have been growing Big Beef for four years in a row for my own consumption. The bushes are tall, reaching 2 m in a greenhouse, and require staking. The fruits are large, the pulp is fleshy and very sweet. The maximum weight reached 700 g. Tomatoes are delicious fresh; we also prepare sauces and juice from them.”
Natalya, Bolshoye Kozino village, Nizhny Novgorod region. : “Big Beef is one of the favorites in my area. With proper care, fruiting continues until frost. Tomatoes can be picked at the stage of technical ripeness, and they will ripen quietly in foam trays.”
Characteristics of Big Beef tomato
The Big Beef F1 tomato variety does not lose ground due to its characteristics. Its ripening time, taste and impressive appearance make it in demand. This variety is grown both in plots and on a larger scale.
Productivity and fruiting
It ripens quite early, which is why summer residents of the middle zone love it. The yield of Big Beef tomatoes is about 10 kg per 1 m2. A maximum of 4 kg of tomatoes can be harvested from a bush. The yields are higher in the greenhouse. The quality of care for tomatoes also affects - if care is poor, there will be significantly fewer fruits.
Area of application of fruits
Since the variety is classified as beefsteak, it is consumed mainly fresh or after cooking. In preparations, the fruits are used for juices and tomato paste. In the USA, these tomatoes are put on burgers.
Resistance to diseases and pests
One of the main advantages of the Big Beef tomato variety is its high resistance to diseases characteristic of tomatoes. It is rarely affected by wilt, gray leaf spot, and tobacco mosaic virus.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
The Big Beef F1 tomato has many advantages:
- high yield rates;
- resistance to sudden changes in temperature;
- immunity to common tomato diseases;
- excellent taste;
- the ability to cultivate tomatoes in a greenhouse and open ground;

Growing rules
Big Beef tomatoes require careful attention. It is important to follow agricultural cultivation techniques, then it will be possible to obtain fruits weighing up to 1 kg.
Planting seedlings
Big Beef F1 tomatoes are sown for seedlings in February or early March. Sod soil is mixed in containers, and then disinfected in the oven or microwave for 15 minutes. If it’s frosty outside, you can put it on the balcony or outside the window.
Seeds of the Big Beef variety are kept in a warm place before planting. Tomatoes are sown in boxes or separate cups to avoid picking later. You can use peat tablets, which will make caring for seedlings much easier.
Advice! It is better to soak the seeds in a growth stimulator before planting.
In large containers, the interval between tomatoes is kept at 2 cm, covered with a 1 cm layer of peat on top. After planting, the tomatoes are covered with film or glass and placed in a warm place. At a temperature of +25 °C, the seeds will germinate in 3–4 days. The shelter is removed and lowered to +23 °C during the day and +16 °C at night. In such conditions, the seedlings will feel good.
It is better to water with a sprayer when the soil begins to dry out. The room with seedlings must be ventilated, but make sure there are no drafts. If there is not enough daylight, then you should use lamps and provide additional illumination to the seedlings. Picking is carried out when 5–6 leaves appear. Before transplanting tomatoes to a permanent place, they are hardened. This procedure takes about two weeks. In the first days they are left on the balcony for 2 hours, then the time spent in the cold is increased. Before planting, the plants are left to harden off for a day.
Transfer
Big Beef tomato seedlings are ready to move to a permanent location when the stem has reached a height of 30 cm and about 7-8 leaves have formed. The root system of such plants is quite developed and will tolerate transplantation well.
It is better to grow tomatoes after onions, carrots, cabbage or legumes. Bad predecessors would be peppers, eggplants or potatoes. It is also impossible to grow tomatoes in one place for several years - they will be damaged by diseases and harmful insects found in the soil and plant debris.
The beds for seedlings are prepared in the fall - the soil is dug up and humus is added. In the spring you just need to loosen the soil. Seedlings of the Big Beef variety are placed at a distance of 40 cm, leaving 70 cm between rows. It is better to transfer the tomatoes immediately with a lump of earth, then sprinkle with soil from the garden bed, compact it a little and water it generously. The stems are immediately tied to the support.
Aftercare
Watering Big Beef tomatoes is done once a week. The water should be warm and settled. Water directly at the root, trying not to get on the leaves. The amount of water depends on the stage of plant development. Before flowering, apply 5 liters per week to the tomatoes; when buds appear, water 3 liters of water once every 3 days. When the fruits appear, watering is reduced to prevent cracking of the tomatoes. The soil is regularly loosened; a crust should not be allowed to form. It is also mandatory to ventilate the greenhouse to avoid air stagnation.
Feeding is carried out 3-4 times per season. Both solutions and fertilizers in dry forms can be used. Nutrients are added according to the following scheme:
- The first treatment is carried out with mullein, from which a solution is made in a ratio of 1:10. In this way, the tomatoes will receive nitrogen, which promotes the growth of greenery. Further, this fertilizer is not used so that the plant does not form a lot of leaves to the detriment of the fruits.
- The next feeding is carried out after 3 weeks. Superphosphate and potassium salt are added to the tomatoes. Phosphorus and potassium affect the taste of fruits, improving it.
- When the flowers appear, you need to feed the tomatoes with boric acid. Treatment is carried out per leaf to stimulate the development of ovaries.
- At the time of fruiting, plants should again receive potassium and phosphorus compounds.
Those who prefer natural fertilizers can treat tomatoes with wood ash, both dry and as an infusion.
Big Beef tomatoes should be shaped into one stem. Every week you need to remove the shoots that form in the leaf axils. It is necessary to leave about 8 brushes, and secure the top of the stem to a support.
Planting in the ground and caring for tomatoes
When replanting, you should be careful about choosing a good place in the garden. If tomatoes, potatoes or peppers were already growing on the site last year, it is better to abandon such a place. Neighborhood with these crops is also undesirable. It is better to plant Big after peas or cucumbers.
Soils for planting should be:
- lungs;
- fertile;
- with slight alkalinity or neutral.
When planting seedlings, it is advisable to bury the shoots. This will give additional roots and increase the feeding area.
Particular attention is paid to stepchildren. They all need to be removed when they reach a length of 1.5-2 cm.
Forming Big into one or two shoots will allow you to get a good harvest, but subject to regular, deep watering. Only with water can the plant absorb nutrients. Watering is carried out 3-4 times a week, 2-3 liters for each bush.
No matter how fertile the soil is, Big Beef needs feeding. During the growing season they need to be carried out at least 3 times:
- 2-3 weeks after planting. To do this, it is enough to use organic matter - dilute 1 kg of pig or cattle manure in a bucket of water. If you use chicken manure, the concentration is reduced by 2 times (0.5 kg of manure per bucket of water);
- As soon as the tomatoes enter the budding stage, add a tablespoon of potassium sulfate to the organic solution;
- 15-20 days after the second feeding, the third is carried out. You don’t have to use organic matter anymore, but potassium will make the fruits extraordinarily tasty.
The formation of a bush is constantly being done. Since Big is indeterminate, garters and attachment to supports are the basis for high-quality fruiting. You should not allow the shoot to sink under the weight of the tomatoes, this can lead to a break.
It is best to harvest when the fruits begin to turn brown. In this case, the acetylene released during ripening will not interfere with the growth of subsequent tomatoes.
Pest and disease control
The Big Beef hybrid is highly resistant to diseases, but if not properly cared for, it can still be affected by them. Viral diseases cannot be treated, and the bush is simply destroyed. Fungi can grow on tomatoes in high humidity conditions. Such lesions can be diagnosed by dark spots growing on the stem, fruits and leaves. Bordeaux mixture and other products containing copper will help cope with fungal infections.
Advice! If the greenhouse is regularly ventilated, the risk of disease is greatly reduced.
On tomatoes you can often find pests such as:
- mole cricket;
- aphid;
- gall midge;
- whitefly
The best way to control insects is with insecticides. For those who adhere to traditional methods, we can recommend infusions of onion peels, soda or ash.
