But the work in the garden does not end: after the leaves fall, you still need to treat the fruit trees with fungicides and continue water-recharging irrigation. It's time to clean up and prepare for the next season. Try to remove all leaves from the garden, as fungal spores and pest larvae can overwinter in them.

I try to clean up the garden and vegetable garden as much as possible so that I don’t waste time on it in the spring. Apply fertilizers and organic matter to the soil and dig it up. In October, you can prepare cuttings of fruit trees for winter grafting and trim dry and damaged branches. Trim off spent blooms on hydrangeas.

Work with flowering crops in October 2022 according to the Lunar sowing calendar

October is a “benefit” of tubers and bulbs. Some crops are dug up and stored for storage at this time, others are planted. Preparing flower beds for winter completes the annual cycle of work on the site.

Their beauty, health and harvest next year depend on how well we take care of our plants in the fall.

Therefore, it is advisable to prune perennial ornamental crops in October, when they enter the dormant stage; the underground organs of the plants have had time to accumulate nutrients during the warm period, and there is no risk of stimulating the growth of new shoots by pruning.

Trim perennials as low as possible, leaving a few centimeters. The fashionable trend of leaving perennials unharvested is not suitable for peonies, phlox, daylilies, irises and other capricious crops. This rather applies to cereals and “new wave” plants, which are close to wild plants and practically do not suffer from any disease.

Remove the clematis from the supports and mulch them for the winter. Trim clematis blooming on the shoots of the current year.

Before the middle of the month, plant and replant herbaceous perennials, plant tulips and hyacinths.

Work with indoor plants in October 2022 according to the Lunar sowing calendar

In October, the heating season begins, and another one is added to the usual responsibilities: maintaining air humidity, especially since indoor plants that had previously been “staying” in the garden in the fresh air also return home.

During this period, reduce watering and fertilizing for plants that need a period of rest. Fuchsias brought from the dacha can bloom until the end of October. But, after flowering, they need to be provided with a relatively cold winter and rest.

The influence of the moon phase on planting

The phases of the moon in October 2022 affect both the roots of plants and the above-ground parts. Planting plants on a certain lunar day can speed up their germination, growth, and affect the fruits of future plants.

On some days, you must refrain from planting, weeding and loosening the roots of plants and flowers, because... this can lead to damage to plants, slow growth, rotting, or, for example, disrupt their energy balance. This affects not only direct work with the soil, but also other work in the garden and garden.

If you want to reap a good harvest, then you obviously need everything to be done in October 2022, according to the lunar sowing calendar.

If you are planting a plant, especially perennials, trees that are expected to have a long life span, or seedlings, then this should be done only on the waxing moon, preferably before the full moon. This should not be done on the day of the new moon.

Plants planted before the full moon will grow tall. Just as all development-oriented activities should begin on the waxing Moon, so plants, especially perennials, should be given a new life in a new place on the waxing Moon.

What should gardeners do in October?

In October, gardeners and gardeners continue the autumn season of planting and cleaning their garden plots.

Some crops can and should be planted in October.

Vegetables sown before winter will sleep well under the snow and sprout together in the spring.

Winter onions, garlic and green manure are planted in open ground, and early carrots, beets, celery, parsley, and sorrel are sown.

Early radishes, radishes, head lettuce, spring onions, chives, and lettuce are planted in a greenhouse or on a windowsill.

The beds with ripening vegetables are covered with film or lutrasil. The ripe crop is collected and sent for storage or processing.

First of all, vegetables that are afraid of frost are collected.

Frost-resistant crops are harvested last.

Until October 20, seedlings of fruit trees, berries and ornamental shrubs are being planted. For the purpose of renewal, blackberries, raspberries, currants, and gooseberries are replanted.

Perennials, bulbous flowers, roses, and clematis are planted and replanted.

Rosemary is covered or brought into a warm room. Biennials and perennials, if necessary, are covered with lutrasil or spunbond.

Bulbous and tuberous flowers are dug up in the flower beds. Tubers and bulbs are sent for storage in the pantry or balcony.

Wild growth is removed from the area using pruning shears or an ax. Sanitary pruning of trees and shrubs is carried out.

Tree trunks are cleared of old bark and whitened so that their bark is not damaged by frost in winter.

When there are no leaves left on the fruit trees, they need to be water-recharged. Especially if autumn is dry and cool. Then the roots are insulated with a 10-centimeter layer of humus or peat.

Leaves and dry grass are raked and burned in the area. The lawn is being mowed.

White f. Siberian dogwood takes on crimson shades in autumn.
In recent years, the first frosts in the Moscow region come in October, so the foliage of perennials lasts a long time. Every time the question arises, when is the best time to prune foliage? And there is no one-size-fits-all solution here. If it is more convenient for a gardener to prune everything in the fall rather than in the spring, then that is what should be done.

Be sure to prune perennials with signs of disease - spotting, powdery mildew, gray rot. These are, first of all, peonies, paniculate phlox, bearded irises

In October we prune herbaceous peonies.

There is a group of plants whose foliage is difficult to trim and collect in the spring, such as Siberian iris and daylily, so it’s better to do it now.

Perennials that go into winter with leaves, such as primrose, heuchera, heucherella, tiarella, oriental poppy, and bergenia, are not pruned. Many perennials overwinter better without pruning. This primarily applies to cereals

Miscanthus and other grains overwinter better without pruning

We cover large-leaved, serrate, and oak-leaved hydrangeas before other crops. We bend the branches to the ground and cover them with peat and garden soil. You can cover the top with non-woven covering material or burlap. Frosts always come unexpectedly

Large-leaved hydrangea after frost

Hydrangea rough Sargent after frost

Preparing plants for winter shelter begins in September-October. In addition to hydrangeas, we cover roses and rhododendrons. We bend roses with flexible shoots to the ground. First we tie the shoots and pin them to the ground. Welding electrodes or special fasteners are suitable for this. We install a frame on top, for example, arches or wooden structures.

It makes no sense to bend down and save the shoots of hybrid tea varieties of roses, since in the spring they require more severe pruning than other groups of roses. And they bend down very poorly, so we trim the bushes just below the height of the frame for shelter. Usually this is 30 cm. We will lay out the covering material on the prepared structures later.

Sheltering rhododendrons is also carried out in two stages. At the first stage, we install structures for shelter and cover the bushes with covering material only from above. We will carry out complete cover after the tree trunk circles are covered with snow - in November. If the bushes are still small, then metal arcs for a greenhouse are perfect. They will protect rhododendrons from breaking the bush in winter and spring. We carry out additional winter mulching of the tree trunk circle with peat and pine litter.

We collect fallen leaves from the lawn before the leaves fall. We use foliage for compost and winter mulching in flower beds

Combining lawn combing with leaf collection

The lack of moisture this year manifests itself on coniferous plants with severe needle fall. The dense crowns of coniferous plants themselves cannot free themselves from fallen needles

Thujas need to be cleared of old needles

The crowns need to be cleaned. This will protect against the development of fungal diseases. Conifers, especially dwarf forms, must be treated with copper-containing preparations, for example “Ordan”, “Abiga-Pik”.
