How to make arcs for a greenhouse with your own hands

Ready-made greenhouses, which are offered by modern construction companies, are so expensive that purchasing a three-year harvest on the market will be even cheaper. But after many programs about transgenetic fruits and vegetables, it is quite natural that the owners of their plots in every possible way build greenhouses from literally nothing - old window frames, pegs and even plastic pipes. Moreover, a greenhouse made from curved PVC pipes and stretched with film looks no worse than the most beautiful ready-made structures, and is not inferior in quality. And it costs almost pennies. Arcs for structures can be made from almost any material. The whole secret is to know how. What will be discussed in this article.

Other cladding materials

The greenhouse can be covered with any other covering material.
It can be film or non-woven material. They are cheaper than polycarbonate, but will also last much less. The only thing you can’t protect polycarbonate from is heavy hail. But here you need to rely on your desires and financial capabilities. For example, film will only last one season, no matter how strong it is, you will have to buy it and fix it every year. But it is easy to do.

Non-woven material is good because it perfectly allows air and moisture to pass through, and this is necessary for plants in especially hot summers. Depending on the density, the service life of such material is up to 5 years. It is removed for the winter and attached to the frame again at the beginning of the season.

Plastic arches

This is the easiest to implement and cheapest way to set up a greenhouse. Plastic arcs for greenhouses are durable and light, quick installation, and long service life. The material will not harm plants due to environmental safety.

However, light weight is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Strong gusts of wind can blow away the greenhouse and damage the seedlings. Plastic is not as durable as metal and is easily damaged.

Manufacturing process:

  1. In the prepared area, pins are dug into the ground - they are located parallel to each other at a distance of 50 cm. They should rise above the surface by 15-20 cm. It is recommended to prepare pins 50-60 cm long in advance.
  2. The ends of plastic arcs are put on the pins (each on both sides). Wooden sticks, stakes, reinforcement, or the same PVC profiles, only of a smaller diameter, can be used as a base.
  3. The number and length of pipes are calculated in advance. It’s easier to take a ready-made template, but if necessary, it’s not difficult to create a section layout yourself. The number of compartments is calculated according to the rule - no more than 50 cm of distance between them.
  4. To increase the stability of the base, a pipe is tied along the entire length (on top of the arcs) of the greenhouse. For the same purpose, you can install transverse jumpers (from fasteners and clamps). This will increase strength, but the structure will not be so easy to install - this is the main advantage of plastic greenhouses.

If there is still a need to achieve maximum stability of the frame (installed permanently, in a windy region), then you will have to buy very thick plastic arches.

To bend them you will need a hair dryer - the tubes are heated to give the desired shape. Temperature – 170 degrees Celsius. When the plastic cools, the arcs will not lose their shape, but will be fixed.

Selection of materials for a greenhouse

Before you start making a greenhouse with your own hands, you should decide what it should be like. A stationary adjacent building will differ from a small portable one not only in size, but also in the choice of material.

Most often, simple buildings are installed at dachas, consisting of bent metal or plastic elements (for example, thin arcs) and film or non-woven material. For stationary, durable greenhouses, a wooden base and glass or polycarbonate are used.

Basis of design

The frame for stretching the film is usually arcs. Before covering the greenhouse with film, the arcs are dug into the ground at an equal distance, and a covering material is attached on top.

You can buy ready-made arches or make them yourself from suitable materials. When creating you can use:

  1. Plastic arches from pipes. You can use defective ones of suitable size. The plastic is light but durable, bends well and can last for many years. It is heated, bent and left to cool, after which it takes the desired shape.
  2. PVC water pipes. Their main difference is the presence of adapters and crosses, which can be used to secure the pipes in the desired position.
  3. Metal pipes. They are stronger than plastic ones, but heavier and more difficult to bend. They can be shaped using special pipe benders or manually.
  4. Steel rods. They will be more durable and stronger than plastic ones, but to create the structure you will need a welding machine and the ability to work with it.
  5. Garden hose (you can use an old worn out one). It bends perfectly so that it holds its shape; a willow rod is inserted inside. For fixation, a wooden base is used: the pieces of wood are attached with an elongated “P”, to which bent arcs are attached on both sides.

Wooden frameSource whomestudio.com

It’s easy to figure out what you can use to make arcs for a greenhouse. For the frame, you can use almost any durable and flexible material, even fairly thick wire or willow twigs. They even use plastic hoops and the base of clamshells, the main thing is that the frame holds its shape and leaves enough space inside.

Covering film

Film is most often used as a covering material. This is an inexpensive and durable material, easy to handle and does not require special handling skills.

There are several types of films:

  • Polyethylene. Its main advantage is its low price, thanks to which it can be easily updated every season, and the film is also easy to wash. There are many more disadvantages: polyethylene breaks easily, is quickly destroyed under the influence of external factors and is not suitable for low temperatures.
  • PVC. Durable, comfortable and elastic material, available in color options and with various additional qualities. Can be used for up to 2-5 years, can withstand up to -17 degrees. Disadvantages of PVC film - high cost.

Reinforced filmSource eco-retail.ru

Some types of films differ in certain characteristics. To do this, additional ingredients are added to them during production. Their choice will depend on

The following types are distinguished:

  • Heat retaining. Has a whitish matte finish. It does not transmit heat well, which makes it much hotter inside the greenhouse. Can be used up to 4 years.
  • Light transforming. Converts ultraviolet light into infrared light: if you shine a UV lamp on it, the color will change to red.
  • Light stabilized. It is resistant to sun exposure and has an extended service life. Its color ranges from yellow to pink. Recommended for use in hot areas: the film does not transmit light and heat well, so the plants will not get burned. It cannot be used in the shade.

Multi-colored filmSource remstroiblog.ru

  • Frost-resistant. Deciding how to make a greenhouse from arcs and frost-resistant film in cold conditions is not difficult. It resists hail and frost and does not crack due to temperature changes.
  • Foamed. It consists of two layers - monolithic and foam. Transmits up to 70% of light and scatters it throughout the greenhouse, maintaining the temperature inside well. Frost-resistant.
  • Air bubble or bubbly. It consists of three layers – “bubbles”, “pressed” on both sides by flat layers. Retains heat well and allows light to pass through thanks to air bubbles.

When choosing a material, it is important to pay attention to its thickness, color and strength, as well as additional characteristics. For example, if there is no additional lighting inside the greenhouse, it is better to choose transparent material

Price will also play an important role: inexpensive films often last only a year.

Greenhouses made of arcs with covering material: design features

The design of a greenhouse, made of arcs and covering material, is always quite primitive. It is an arched frame, which is covered with a material suitable for this purpose, usually polyethylene film or non-woven fabric. The height of the greenhouse is usually considered to be the distance from the ground to the top point of any of the arches, and usually this figure ranges from 0.5 to 1.3 m.

Greenhouse arc length

The optimal width of a greenhouse made of arcs is considered to be 0.6-1.2 m. The width directly depends on the length of the arc and the height of the structure, while the length is determined by the distance between the arcs and their number. The most popular are factory-produced models, which have a length of 4.6 or 8 m.

Making your own greenhouse from arcs completely removes any restrictions from you, and you are free to make a greenhouse of absolutely any size. You just need to remember that a larger structure will be less resistant to wind. This is especially true for those greenhouses that were made with PVC arches.

In addition, the design does not necessarily have to be primitive. For example, a drawing of Fedorov’s greenhouse demonstrates that a much more complex and at the same time easy-to-use structure can be made from the same arcs.

Scheme of a complex greenhouse design made of arcs with covering material

Why are greenhouses made from arcs with covering material used?

There are a number of problems that a greenhouse made of arcs with covering material can help solve. Let's consider why it is worth buying a greenhouse with film, and what problems it can be used to solve:

in regions where it can be quite cold and the climate is not suitable for growing heat-loving plants, such greenhouses are used for heat-loving crops

It is important to understand here that the design must be suitable in size for large, mature plants, and not just seedlings. In this case, the film or canvas is fixed using special clamps, which allow you to easily access the bed at any time; Another purpose of this type of greenhouse is the gradual adaptation of seedlings planted in open ground to external conditions and other temperatures

Thanks to the covering material, even very young plants will not be afraid of either night frosts or the scorching sun during the day. The structure can be easily disassembled immediately after the plants have taken root, which eliminates the need to replant them;

A simple collapsible greenhouse made of arcs with covering material

  • in the spring, and especially in the early periods, when it is still too cold for plants, you can grow greens, radishes and other similar crops inside the greenhouse, receiving a wonderful addition to your diet;
  • simple collapsible greenhouses made of arcs are often used to stimulate seed germination. For example, if you sow carrots or parsnips, you will have to wait quite a long time for the first shoots in open ground. It’s a completely different matter if you build a greenhouse around it: the germination process will take place 3 times faster;
  • Such simple greenhouses are also used in cases where there is a risk of mass destruction of plants by pests. The structure is simply assembled and dismantled immediately after you are sure that the threat has passed;
  • protecting crops from birds and animals is another purpose that a greenhouse made of arcs does an excellent job of. This may be necessary, for example, during the strawberry picking season, when birds pose a threat to your harvest. The film will become an insurmountable barrier for them, even if you cover the beds only halfway.

The greenhouse will protect the crop from pests and insects

The process of assembling a finished greenhouse from arcs takes very little time and is quite simple. Each kit comes with special pegs that need to be driven into the ground, after which all that remains is to attach the arcs to them. The covering material is pulled from above and securely fixed using special clamps.

Helpful advice! An even simpler option is to buy a greenhouse made of covering material, the arcs of which are sewn inside the non-woven fabric. In this case, all you have to do is unfold the structure on the garden bed, place it in the right place and drive pegs into the ground to ensure its stability.

Durable metal arcs for greenhouses

The most durable for large greenhouse sizes are metal arcs, however, to assemble the entire structure, you need welding equipment, or drilling holes for a bolted connection. For the frame of the greenhouse, you can use galvanized profile pipes, which can last up to 20 years.

Nuances:

  1. A grinder is used to trim the metal profile.
  2. After drilling holes for fastening, trimming damages the galvanized layer of the profile.
  3. The drilled areas must be treated with cold zinc.
  4. Cold zinc will protect metal profiles from corrosion, which will increase service life.

Galvanized profiles can be joined by welding. This is the most rational way to combine all the elements of a greenhouse.

Welding is better than using a large number of bolts, rivets, and self-tapping screws.

Welding damages the galvanized coating, and the joints must be treated with a wire brush and cold zinc applied.

Industrial Arc Sets

The kits are arches made of insulated wire or pipes bent according to one template. The set usually contains 6 arches, they are designed for a tunnel shelter or a temporary greenhouse 4-6 m long. The dimensions of the arches - width and height - can be different, from 65 to 120 cm. The arches can also be sold individually - in this case, you can complete a set for greenhouse of the required length.

Arc set

For the manufacture of arcs the following can be used:

  • steel wire Ø5 mm in PVC sheath;
  • steel tube Ø10-Ø12 mm in PVC sheath
  • PVC pipe Ø20-Ø25 mm.

The wire and tube arches are rigid enough to maintain their shape for several seasons. PVC insulation protects them from corrosion, and pins at the ends make it easier to anchor them in the ground. The arcs are simply stuck into the ground to the required depth.

Plastic arc for greenhouse

Arcs made from PVC pipes are more flexible, due to this you can adjust the width and height of the greenhouse. To secure it in the ground, you can use special pegs for PVC pipes or cutting reinforcement.

Methods of attaching the film to the bar and to the arcs

Special clamps are used to attach the covering material to the arches. To hold the canvas on the ground and protect it from the wind, you can purchase a set of pegs and rings. The pegs are stuck into the ground, covered with covering material and clamped with a ring. Covering material, sets of clamps and pegs, as a rule, are purchased separately, focusing on the number and size of the selected arches.

Pegs and rings for covering material

Note! Sets of arcs can be used to make a permanent greenhouse. To do this, it is enough to assemble a frame from boards and bars and attach the arcs to it.

What are arcs for greenhouses made of?

It is easier for a novice gardener to work with light weight and strong material. The HDPE pipe fully corresponds to this description. This is a great option for a small garden plot or vegetable garden.

In addition to their low weight and durability, HDPE pipes do not have a harmful effect on the environment, which becomes especially important when creating environmentally friendly gardening.

Metal becomes rusty when in constant contact with water; this simply will not happen with polyethylene. Considering that watering plants is a mandatory procedure, the anti-corrosion properties of plastic will come in handy.

Of course, pipes made of low-density polyethylene also have their disadvantages. High air temperatures (more than +30 C for several days) reduce the stability of the HDPE structure. The plastic becomes soft and, if it is not covered with anything, begins to melt. Therefore, in the southern regions, where the average daily temperature in summer exceeds 30 degrees, it is better to completely abandon the installation of a HDPE greenhouse or choose a “protector” for it. The problem can be solved by using a special winding. Take white gauze or covering material and secure it to the partitions. Perhaps this is the only drawback.

To eliminate mistakes when creating homemade products, you can use ready-made engineering solutions. But you can only buy a really high-quality greenhouse with arcs and covering material if you carefully study current market offers. Below are examples of products that have received high ratings from ordinary consumers and members of the expert community.

Model "My Hacienda"

These greenhouses are made of polymer pipes, which are lined with covering material. This solution simplifies assembly and ensures integrity under strong wind loads. The manufacturer offers models with lengths of 4, 6 and 8 m and the same cross-section parameters - 1.2 × 0.9 m (Width × Height). When choosing, you need to consider the following features:

  1. Enlarged pegs secure the greenhouse more reliably.
  2. The modified shape without sharp edges prevents accidental damage to the packaging during transportation and storage.
  3. The product is reinforced with stiffening ribs.
  4. Sheathing is made of SUF-42. This non-woven material allows water, light and air to pass through. No moisture accumulates on the inner surface of the coating.

Removable clips are useful for watering. They are installed at the required height to raise the sheathing when ventilated.

Model "Snowdrop"

BashAgroPlast offers high-density non-woven material SUF-60 as standard. The arches are made of low-density polyethylene. The increased pipe diameter of 2 cm allows you to create a reliable power frame.

Application of a greenhouse made of arcs with covering material

The pictures show different options for placing a structure on a plot of land. The height and width of the ceilings can be changed within small limits. Clips are used to secure material for creating shade, lighting, ventilation, watering, and performing other work operations. Such protection in a closed structure prevents damage to plants due to frosts down to -5°C.

Model "Soyuz Tekhplast"

In this greenhouse, the arcs along with the jumpers are assembled from separate parts. This solution allows you to create separate models of great height. Repairs are carried out without unnecessary costs or difficulties.

The kit contains all the components to create a reliable frame

On this greenhouse base you can attach various covering materials. In particular, it is permissible to replace the standard spunbond with polyethylene film.

How to make arcs from PVC pipes for a greenhouse with your own hands

Metal-plastic water pipes can be found in every household. Even if you have to buy it, the material is inexpensive. Work order:

  1. They clear the area for the greenhouse from debris. If necessary, dig up the soil and level it. Markings are applied using a peg. Measure the length of the arc of the future greenhouse.
  2. The pipe is cut into arc length segments. The number of elements is determined based on the distance between the arcs of 50-100 cm. The PVC pipe holds its shape, so the distance can be increased to 80-100 cm.
  3. Along the length of the greenhouse, measure a section for a horizontal crossbar, which is fixed at the top using adapters for plastic pipes.
  4. 50 cm stakes are cut from the reinforcement. They are inserted on the sides at the selected pitch.
  5. Insert the ends of the pipes into the stakes, giving the shape of an arc.
  6. Cover with agrofibre using clothespins.

Recommendations and common mistakes

The greenhouse is built for seasonal use. In this case, the design must meet certain requirements:

  • maintain a positive temperature inside the greenhouse;
  • retain moisture so that seeds can germinate evenly;
  • cut off frost when return frosts occur;
  • a reliable frame should not succumb to strong winds.

Arcs for a greenhouse are made not only in a semicircular shape, but also in a triangular or trapezoidal shape. Some greenhouses are made from old window frames; in this case, the roof is flat.

To ensure that the inside of the greenhouse constantly maintains a positive temperature, it is covered with agrofibre, and a film is laid on top to retain moisture. If the growing seedlings touch the agrofiber walls, there will be no harm to the plant. If the leaves are located close to the film, which is constantly damp, because condensation accumulates, the plant may rot.

When constructing a greenhouse, the need for ventilation is taken into account. Large accumulations of moisture lead to the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria that harm the plant. The greenhouse effect is also harmful to seedlings. Excessive heat leads to illness.

Experts call the optimal size of a greenhouse one height equal to 2/3 of the width. The length is adjusted to 6 m. To give the structure additional strength, the frame is dug into the ground.

To increase the stability of the greenhouse, lugs are sometimes used

The strength of the structure will be increased by a wooden frame or a finished plastic bed. Adapters for plastic pipes are screwed to this base, into which arcs are inserted and secured with self-tapping screws. You should select the correct length of the latter so that they are not short, and carefully measure the width. Also, the reliability of the structure is increased by placing a metal rod in the pipes. This way the pipes will not be hollow, and the steel will give rigidity to the support.

Arcs for a greenhouse are made from lightweight materials if the structure is dismantled after the seedlings have grown. They can come in various forms. Experts advise: before starting to manufacture a structure, it is important to take careful measurements. First, a schematic drawing of a greenhouse is applied to the paper. Think about height, width and length. Calculate the number of horizontal fixing beams. These elements securely fasten the arcs and give the structure reliability.

Features of materials

What to make a greenhouse from? Of course, from proven and long-proven materials on the market. This is a profile pipe for the frame and polycarbonate for the coating.

Let's pay attention to their features during production

The greenhouse can be made by welding or using bolted connections. This depends on the choice of profile pipe, galvanized or uncoated pipes.

Galvanized

This material is good because it is not susceptible to rust, is not afraid of sudden temperature changes, and does not require additional processing. But it also has significant disadvantages:

1) Not suitable for welding in domestic conditions, since the galvanization on the seams quickly burns out, causing the metal to rust. Therefore, bolted connections are used for assembly. But they do not provide such strength and reliability as welded structures.

2) It is not advisable to bend galvanized pipes; this violates the integrity of the protective coating. But what if you need an arched greenhouse? Therefore, only pitched structures can be made from them.

Uncoated pipes

This is an inexpensive and pliable raw material, unlike the previous one. They can be welded and bent with confidence to any bend radius.

The only thing they need is additional treatment against corrosion. To do this, the finished frame is cleaned of scale and other roughness, then degreased, primed, and painted. Children or a wife can come to help with coloring, and then the working family process will delight all participants.

Choosing polycarbonate

When buying polycarbonate, pay attention to the presence of a protective layer against UV radiation. Trying to save money can only harm yourself

Cheap material without a protective layer will fall apart in 1-2 years. Why redo something and spend money when you can do it once for many years to come and enjoy your vegetables every season.

Fiberglass and PVC profile arches

The process of forming such structures is quite simple:

  • fixed on the ground using pins (50 cm) in a special box (frame);
  • it is necessary to form 24 reinforcing rods (each 80 cm). This is the basis for securing the frame;
  • the rods are driven into the ground 40 cm along the two wide sides of the frame from the outside after 50 cm;
  • After this, pipes can be stretched onto the rods, giving them an arched appearance.

They are fixed with metal tape and self-tapping screws.

Making a wooden foundation

The first step is to make the foundation. It is assembled from 4 boards. Level the area where you plan to install. Mark the area using pegs and string, marking the corners.

Dig shallow ditches 10-15 cm deep where the boards will be installed. Connect them together at the corners with self-tapping screws. It is best to take lumber with a thickness of 2-4 cm, the most optimal size is 4 centimeters. To make the tree last longer, treat it with an anti-rot agent. Then the boards can be carefully painted with drying oil, paint or varnish.

The foundation is needed, first of all, to securely fix the pipes as their base. In addition, the structure has a large windage area. Strong winds can topple the structure. To prevent this from happening, wooden or metal pegs are driven into the ground, to which the foundation is secured.

Installation of PVC pipes and methods of connecting them

The ends are attached to the foundation boards. This is done using metal clamps and screws.

For a mini-greenhouse, only this type of pipe fastening is sufficient. But, if it is made at least of medium size, then the arcs will need to be connected by horizontal connections.

There are several options for connecting PVC arches:

1) Fittings secured with a pipe soldering iron.

2) Fittings secured with glue.

3) Wire. In this case, a through hole is drilled in both rods, through which a piece of annealed steel wire is passed and the ends are tightly twisted. Such a connection is reliable, does not require qualifications from the builder and is easy to repair. Instead of wire, you can use a plastic clamp.

4) Bolted connection. A hole is drilled through the crossed rods, a bolt is threaded into it and secured with a nut. You should definitely use washers.

The first two options form non-separable connections. In contrast, fastening with bolts or wires makes it possible to disassemble the structure. This type of building can be disassembled with your own hands at any time and moved to another site.

Creating a wireframe

When using PVC pipes with a diameter of 20-30 mm, you do not need to use special tools to bend them. They are already quite flexible. It is enough to secure one end to the foundation, and then take the other and carefully, without jerking, put the other end in its place. The pipe will bend on its own; the builder’s hand can do this without difficulty.

You don't have to bend the rod at all. In this case, the arc is made from straight segments and has the shape of a triangle, where the upper corner is formed by a fitting.

The simplest structures do not require anything for their construction except pipes for arches and film. In this case, the ends of the arches are stuck directly into the ground, and the ends of the film are covered with soil. You can make such a greenhouse for cucumbers from PVC pipes in a couple of hours, but it will only last one season.

Covering and securing the film

When covering a greenhouse, you will need the help of several people who will carefully straighten the canvas. The length of the piece of film should be equal to the length of the building plus 2 its height with a slight overlap. This is necessary so that the entire structure is completely covered, not only the sides, but also the ends.

The film is attached to the wooden base using nails or self-tapping screws. In this case, a wooden plank is first laid, and then it is nailed to the foundation.

Also, the ends of the film can not be nailed down, but secured with soil or weight. In this case, its length should have a greater margin of approximately 30-40 cm.

It is convenient to attach the film to the arcs with hand-made fasteners from pieces of rubber or polyvinyl chloride hose.

Wooden arches

It is allowed to take wood as a base. Willow or walnut branches are suitable for work - they are quite strong and bend well. Among the advantages of using wood are ease of assembly, environmental friendliness of materials and cost (usually summer residents find branches on their site rather than spend money on them).

Flaws:

  • wood quickly deteriorates in a humid environment;
  • water and heat accumulate inside the greenhouse;
  • Rodents and insects will not leave the material unattended.

Wooden arches are easy to make: the ends of the branches are bent and stuck into the ground, and a canvas (film or fiber) is stretched over them. The material is fixed using weights (heavy stones or bricks are placed along the edges).

Before you start bending wooden branches, it is recommended to place them in water for a day. This will give them elasticity and simplify the process.

If you plan to make a large stationary greenhouse, then it is better to take beams or boards for the base. It wouldn’t hurt to assemble a pallet under the greenhouse. The frames are made of beams (section 50x50 and above), the frame will be rectangular in shape. The elements are fastened to each other using screws or an angle.

An ordinary board with a thickness of at least 20-25 mm will be useful as a connection. The distance between sections does not change (50 cm). The frames are fixed lengthwise using beams of a similar cross-section or boards (20-25 mm). Before final assembly, it is recommended to treat the material with an insect repellent mixture, varnish or paint. It will take more time to assemble a wooden frame, but it will provide strength and reliability for up to 10-15 years.

Arc elements made of wood

Due to the fact that wood is an accessible and inexpensive material, many people prefer to make arches from it. Strong twigs of bushes or durable boards can be used here. The only drawback of such structures is that they rot quickly. Otherwise, the process of making arcs is not difficult and includes only a few steps:

  • First you need to make a shield for the future greenhouse. Its parameters depend on the size of the frame being manufactured, the main thing is that the entire area fits on it. It can be made from any durable boards.
  • Then you should decide on the height of the arc bend, after which you need to nail a strong beam in the middle of the shield, which should be equal to the height of the arc bend.
  • After this, it is necessary to secure the plank well at the edges with two pieces of wood - this is necessary so that the plank can bend into an arc. It should turn out like this: in the middle there should be a beam, which is supported by a central wooden beam, and from the edge on the sides it is tightly pressed by the side beams.
  • Then you need to take the prepared bar and insert it into the resulting machine. Under this beam you need to insert another exactly the same board.
  • Then you need to take self-tapping screws and tighten both strips at a distance of no more than 250 mm.
  • Under the previously connected planks, you need to insert another, third beam, and fasten it in the same way using self-tapping screws, but only with a larger diameter - in this case, the self-tapping screw should fasten together not two, but three beams.
  • After tightening, it is necessary to remove the first arc and, trying it on the greenhouse, make adjustments to the frame of the manufactured machine.
  • Then you need to add new arcs as needed, adjusting the homemade greenhouse machine.

There are many other options for creating arcs that are less practical than the above examples.

Arcs from waste hoses

A very cheap method, but temporary, is to use an old hose that is no longer suitable for watering beds. The structure gains rigidity due to flexible wooden branches (it is better to use willow).

The hose is cut into pieces of a specific length. Branches are threaded inside. The arcs are bent and dug into the ground. The distance between the compartments is standard - 50 cm. Then the protective film is stretched and the greenhouse is ready. This option is only suitable for arranging small greenhouses for growing seedlings and seeds.

If it is not clear how to secure the arcs for the greenhouse, then they can be buried in the ground for reliable fixation. The ends are fixed on a pre-made soil pallet. Fastening occurs using self-tapping screws. Their length is 10-15% longer than the length of the fittings and pallet. If the frame is fastened with screws and bolts, then their dimensions are calculated taking into account the washer under the cap or head of the bolt.

Before making arcs for a greenhouse, prepare all the materials, cultivate the ground and calculate the template. All that remains is to assemble the greenhouse and plant the seedlings.

Choosing material for cladding

An important step when constructing greenhouses yourself from profile pipes is the choice of material for the coating. Not only the appearance of the greenhouse, but also the quality of the future harvest depends on it.

There are several main types of material:

  1. Glass - has high protective properties. A greenhouse covered with glass protects seedlings from frost, while retaining heat well and not blocking the passage of sunlight. All these qualities create excellent conditions for the growth of many crops (peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes). However, there are also disadvantages - high cost, complexity of installation and fragility. Therefore, this material is rarely used for greenhouses in garden beds.
  2. Polyethylene film is an inexpensive material, but it does not have high strength; in addition, it deteriorates in direct sunlight, so its service life is not long.
  3. Non-woven material - perfectly transmits sunlight and water, while providing plants with protection from negative atmospheric influences. It is not expensive, but such material is not durable, it will last no more than 5 years. In addition, it is not durable and can be damaged by strong gusts of wind.
  4. Cellular polycarbonate is a hard polymer that is light in weight and has high strength. It scatters the sun's rays well, which has a beneficial effect on the thermal insulation conditions inside the structure. Today it is often used to make a greenhouse from a profile with your own hands, since working with this material is not difficult if you correctly calculate the required size.

We attach it to the frame

Let's look at the assembly of a greenhouse frame from profile products using the example of the most optimal type of covering material - polycarbonate. It is worth considering the expansion properties of polycarbonate. This coefficient differs from that of metal, so it is necessary to place a damper gasket, possibly rubber-based, into the gaps.

Assembling a collapsible greenhouse frame 2m wide

The fasteners should be placed at a distance of 10 - 15 cm from each other, then the connection will be tighter. The polycarbonate sheet is placed in such a way that there is a sun protection film on the outside of the greenhouse. The contact points between the frame and the sheet should be sealed with sealing tape or coated with sealants.

The holes must be drilled with a drill using low speeds, their diameter should be about 10 mm. Fixation is carried out using bolts in all corners of the sheet. To prevent the corner from breaking off, you should indent a few centimeters from the corner.

If the width of the polycarbonate sheet is larger than the gap between the uprights of the structure, then it must be cut

It is important that the joint must pass exactly in the middle of the pipe

If desired, polycarbonate can be secured using a special profile. In this case, the fasteners are mounted on the frame with screws. And only then, the sheets are installed in the existing openings. Each subsequent sheet must be laid adjacent to the one already attached. The gaps should also be sealed. This method is reliable, in addition, it significantly reduces the sheathing time.

After the polycarbonate is fixed to the profile pipes, the protective film must be removed from its surface. At this point, the work on covering the frame is completed. In general, if you wish, anyone can build a greenhouse on their personal plot from profile pipes covered with polycarbonate or other material with their own hands, provided they have a drawing. Despite the fact that the process will take a lot of time and effort, it is all compensated by a good and high-quality harvest.

The process of making arcs for the frame

Plastic arches

Method 1

We drive stakes around the perimeter of the future greenhouse. Please note: they should protrude 13-16 cm above ground level. We install curved pipes on top.

Note! It is important to maintain the interval between the arches to prevent their possible sagging. The optimal distance is 0.5 m.

Note! It is important to maintain the interval between the arches to prevent their possible sagging. The optimal distance is 0.5 m.

Method 2

Method 2

  1. We select metal rods that fit freely into the pipes.
  2. Cut into pieces (0.6 m long).
  3. We drive 20 cm into the ground, and leave 40 above the surface of the earth.
  4. We place plastic pipes on metal rods.

Wooden arches

How to make wooden arches for a greenhouse with your own hands? It is most convenient to manufacture directly on the frame of the future structure or on a plane, according to a pre-selected template. Wooden arches must be carefully processed and not have knots on their surface. The optimal thickness is up to 12 mm. The photo below shows an arched greenhouse made of wood:

Wire arches

You can even use 10mm wire, which is most often sold in rings on construction markets. You can cut it into equal parts using a grinder.

PVC profile and fiberglass arches

  • draw a bend on a flat surface or create a template, if possible, using simple wire;
  • we heat up the profile using a hair dryer (recommended temperature is up to 180 °C);
  • at the next stage, carefully bend the arcs according to the template.

Note! You can bend the profile without heating

But in this case it is important to ensure stable internal voltage in it

Arcs made of steel

Very durable and reliable, but relatively expensive. To make them yourself, you need to use a welding machine. The production of steel arcs for greenhouses should be carried out in the following order:

  • we measure the half-arcs and select a pipe with a length twice as long;
  • cut into 2 equal parts;
  • We determine the pipe that will act as the top of the structure. We weld tees directly to it along the outskirts, and crosspieces along the length (maintain an interval of 0.5 m);
  • We weld the elements cut off using a cross to the pipe going up;
  • We weld two more tees to the arc where the doorway will be;
  • We weld all the arcs provided for by the design, with the exception of the outermost ones, to the greenhouse walls;
  • align the greenhouse along its length;
  • we fix it using a transverse pipe and 2 tees for the door pillars;
  • cover the frame with film.

How to calculate the arc length for a greenhouse?

To calculate the optimal arc size for a greenhouse, first determine the width of the bed. For example, let's take 1m. You need to calculate the arc for an arched greenhouse in the following sequence:

  1. We equate the width of the future structure to the diameter of half the arc. In this case, the height of the greenhouse will be equal to the radius. That is: R=D/2=1m/2=0.5m.
  2. Now we calculate the length of the arc as half the length of a circle whose diameter is 1 m. L=0.5x*πD=1.57 m.

If, when starting the project, it turned out that the optimal length of the arc is not known, as is the part of the circle that it makes up, you can calculate the arc for the greenhouse using Huygens’ formula, which looks like this:

p2l+2l – L 3

AB=L

AM=l

AB, AM and MB are chords.

The error in the result is up to 0.5% if the arc AB contains 60°. But this figure drops sharply if the angular measure is reduced. For example, for an arc of 45° the error will be only 0.02%.

How to make a polycarbonate greenhouse with a galvanized profile frame with your own hands

techkomplect.ru

  • Assembly difficulty: average.
  • Foundation: not required.
  • Cost: low.

A simpler and more affordable option for a polycarbonate greenhouse. It does not use expensive metal pipe that needs to be welded. And galvanized profiles for plasterboard systems are used as frame material. They are easily cut with metal scissors and fastened with ordinary self-tapping screws.

  1. When choosing sizes, as usual, we start from the parameters of polycarbonate sheets. Since the profiles lose rigidity when bent, it is better to choose a gable greenhouse rather than an arched one.
  2. By analogy with arches made of a metal pipe, a frame made of galvanized profile is assembled from ribs in the form of a house.
  3. The assembled modules are installed on a frame made of wooden beams and tied together with sections of profiles. Doors and a window for ventilation are made in the front and rear walls.
  4. At the end, the frame is sheathed with polycarbonate sheets, which are secured using special self-tapping screws with plastic thermal washers.

Design requirements for greenhouses

Small greenhouses are designed for seasonal use. Frame (arch) materials must be:

  • lungs;
  • durable;
  • easy to install and maintain.

Arches can have a round, oval, rectangular and even triangular shape. What can greenhouse arcs be made from: plastic, metal or wood. Each option has both its advantages and disadvantages.

When assembling a greenhouse, you need to understand that it needs a ventilation system. An abundance of moisture will create an environment for the development of bacteria, and excess heat will steam the sprouts. The height of the greenhouse should be equal to 2/3 of the width.

You can calculate the arc for a greenhouse using the table:

Arc type:Height(cm):Width(cm):Length(cm):
Round and oval60-80120600
2-core90220600
3-core90440600

A reliable frame will serve the summer resident for more than a year. The number of arcs is calculated based on the length of the greenhouse - there must be a distance of at least 50 cm between sections.

Cladding material for greenhouse

Each greenhouse facing material has its own advantages and disadvantages. The simplest material is PVC greenhouse film, it is low cost, easy to install, and has minimal requirements for structures (wooden or metal base frame).

Disadvantages of greenhouse film:

  • light mechanical damage;
  • low level of thermal insulation;

Glass and film structures are gradually losing their popularity; they are being replaced by modern polycarbonate solutions.

Polycarbonate has many advantages: strength, attractive price, light transmittance and good thermal insulation. We are talking about cellular polycarbonate (plastic greenhouse), made in the form of two-layer briquettes.

The shelf life of this design is significantly higher than that of film. At a minimum, the greenhouse will last 10 years or more. Due to the heavy load, a wooden frame cannot be used here; you will have to construct a metal one to reliably hold the polycarbonate sheets.

Glass is considered to be the most durable and at the same time fragile cladding material. However, it holds heat well and transmits light well. Due to the serious requirements for the frame and structural reliability, glass loses to polycarbonate.

    Sequence of operations

    1. First, the length of the half-arc is measured.
    Mistakes here are completely unacceptable. 2. A pipe whose length is equal to the length of two half-arcs is cut into two equal parts. 3. Tees are welded to the upper pipe at a distance of up to 60 cm from each other. 4. The cut parts are connected to the upper pipe using a cross. 5. To the extreme arc where the door is planned, another pair of tees is welded so that their third holes look down. They should be equidistant from each other. Some experts pass reinforcement through the entire length of plastic pipes and bend such a structure until an arc is obtained. Of course, this method is the most labor-intensive and time-consuming. But as a result, the greenhouse gains unsurpassed strength and durability. Corrosion will not affect the metal, and the coating will not come into contact with irregularities and burrs of the reinforcement (rod).

    How to choose the right arches

    If you decide to buy arcs for a greenhouse, be sure to measure the length of the bed. Not only the price, but also the appearance of the finished structure will depend on how accurately you determine the dimensions. The missing parts can be replaced, or you can cheat and place the arcs further from each other.

    There is a special conversation about the greenhouse. Still, this construction is more technically complex, so miscalculations with size and quantity will cost more than an unfinished greenhouse. It’s better to thoroughly think through everything and assemble it once than to break and redo it an infinite number of times.

    Although in the case of a garden greenhouse, additions and alterations are inevitable. Patching the roof, replacing a broken arc, film or polycarbonate - this is just a small list of things that await a summer resident at the beginning of the spring-summer season. And that's the minimum. A poorly equipped greenhouse can sag or even collapse under the weight of snow and melt water. To prevent this from happening, find a suitable drawing from the very beginning.

    The classic arched shape or the traditional rectangular look equally good on the site. When choosing, be guided by your own preferences and do not forget about the most important thing - the plants that you plant there.

    Selection of covering material

    For the successful cultivation of vegetables in a greenhouse, the choice of covering material is of no small importance. It must meet the following requirements:

    1. - It's good to let in the sun's rays.
    2. — Protect plants from cold air as much as possible.
    3. - Have sufficient strength for long-term use.

    Two types of material have all these qualities:

    1. Film.

    There is a wide selection of films for greenhouses and greenhouses of different widths, prices and quality on sale. The cheapest option is regular polyethylene film. But its price is the only plus. It is quite thin and can only be used for one season, or at most two.

    Reinforced or air-bubble film materials are more durable, although somewhat expensive.

    REFERENCE! They are more expensive than regular film, but much more durable.

    In addition, due to their thickness, such materials can withstand lower temperatures and better protect plants from adverse conditions.

    2. Nonwovens.

    They are very popular among vegetable growers.

    Any brand of such material varies in thickness. The lightest material is the density of 17g/m2.

    The densest thickness is 60 g/m2.

    The optimal option for covering greenhouses, combining sufficient density and excellent breathability, is a density of 42g/m2..

    ATTENTION! Experienced vegetable growers advise using two materials for arched greenhouses. The frame is covered with film at the beginning of the season, before planting and when sowing seeds in the ground.

    The fact is that such a coating helps the soil to quickly warm up and retain maximum heat to improve seedlings.

    The frame is covered with film at the beginning of the season, before planting and when sowing seeds in the ground. The fact is that such a coating helps the soil to quickly warm up and retain maximum heat to improve seedlings.

    Then, when the crops have sprouted or the seedlings are ready for planting in the greenhouse, the film covering is replaced with non-woven material. This coating allows the plant to breathe, which means it prevents the plants underneath from overheating. Replacement with non-woven material is carried out when heat sets in.

    IMPORTANT! It is not recommended to cover a greenhouse made of arcs with a thin non-woven material, since under the influence of friction it will tear and is unlikely to serve you even until the end of one season

    Tools and materials for work

    Farmers even take willow branches as the basis of the frame. Sometimes used wooden window frames, PVC hoses, and pipes are used. Arcs are made of metal wire or tube, corner. As a template, plastic is used, the same wire - anything that is easy to bend and hold its shape. The outline is even drawn on the ground or asphalt.

    If the arches will be made of dense PVC profile, then for bending, prepare:

    • construction hair dryer;
    • connecting corners;
    • screws;
    • corners for joints;
    • self-tapping screws;
    • thermal washers;
    • crosses.

    Before making arcs for the greenhouse, you need to prepare the materials:

    • washers, nuts and bolts;
    • screws;
    • corners;
    • plates;
    • metal cutting tool;
    • a pipe bender, torch or other tools that allow you to achieve the desired shape from the fittings.

    Greenhouses, regardless of type and shape, require plastic film - it collects heat, retains moisture and creates its own climate inside. It is allowed to stretch agrofibre onto the base.

    Types of structures

    The design, created from arcs, is quite primitive. It consists of an arched frame tightly covered with material. This can be a polyethylene film or non-woven fabric. The height of such a structure ranges from 50 centimeters to 1.5 meters.

    Film

    The structure of such a greenhouse is usually covered with a film of inexpensive polyethylene or a denser air-bubble fabric. Such material will last for more than one season, and it will also preserve seedlings much better and protect them from frost. Designs don't have to be simple. Having the same materials available, you can build a greenhouse of a more complex design, which will be much more convenient to use.

    Non-woven

    This coating has different degrees of density. Recently it has become very popular in the manufacture of prefabricated greenhouses. When choosing this option, you need to buy a canvas whose density will be 42 g/m2. It will not allow the cold to penetrate the greenhouse, and will not be damaged by wind or rain.

    Such a prefabricated structure can perform the same functions as a greenhouse. The arc-shaped greenhouse is constructed in such a way as to protect the seedlings from adverse weather factors. It also retains heat inside. To prevent the non-woven fabric from slipping off the arches, it is attached to them with special clamps or ordinary clothespins.

    Such greenhouses are covered with film only at the beginning of the season. It helps the soil to warm up well and also retains heat for tall seedlings. When the seeds germinate and are ready for planting, the film can be replaced with non-woven fabric. It will allow the plants to breathe, but it is worth knowing that such a replacement can only occur with the onset of heat. Poor non-woven fabric will not last long, so you need to buy high-quality material.

    Different types of greenhouses and their prices

    In addition to the individual components for constructing a greenhouse, you can also purchase a ready-made kit with the required number of parts and elements. In stores you can buy greenhouses made of non-woven material and greenhouses with polyethylene coating. This option will help you get rid of unnecessary worries about selecting and purchasing individual parts of the structure. The type of kit and the number of parts in it depends primarily on the area on which you are going to deploy this device.

    This is what a kit for assembling a greenhouse with a plastic frame looks like

    Please note that factory greenhouses do not require any additional measures for their installation, because the kit already includes all the elements necessary for this. But there is one problem: it will be almost impossible to improve the finished product, so you should choose in advance a design that fully meets your requirements. This is especially true for greenhouses with a combined frame and canvas. Let's look at the different types of greenhouses so that you can choose the one that suits you best.

    Greenhouse "Dayas"

    The “Dayas” design is one of the oldest ways to shelter young crops from the hostile influence of the environment on them. The length of each rib in the unbent state is 2 meters, and such an arc is a metal tube with a diameter of 20 mm coated with PVC. Each stand is supplied with two pegs 20cm long to make it convenient to install the greenhouse. They penetrate into the ground very easily and securely hold the greenhouse.

    The Dayas greenhouse is very popular due to its simplicity and affordable price.

    The number of sections of the Dayas greenhouse can be changed depending on need; for this you only need to add or, on the contrary, remove several segments. The standard kit allows you to assemble a greenhouse up to 6 meters long. The average height reaches 0.7 meters, and the width of the factory structure is 1.2 meters. A greenhouse of this system with four sections costs an average of 1,600 rubles.

    Plastic clips are included in the kit to secure the covering material. There is also always the opportunity to buy additional fastening units in the store.

    Caring for the beds is made easier by the fact that you can always lift the canvas and tie it on top to gain access to the plants. This is facilitated by the ease with which the covering material moves along the arches. The coating itself is 2.2 meters wide.

    This video contains all the basic information about the Dayas greenhouse

    Greenhouse "Agronomist"

    This greenhouse is also simple and similar in many respects to the previous model. The frame is also made of metal tubes coated with polyvinyl chloride. For installation, the kit also includes pegs, 20 cm long.

    The greenhouse agronomist is very easy to install on any soil, thanks to its metal frame

    The height of the Agronomist is not much greater than the Dayasa. Most manufacturers make such arcs so that the entire structure is 0.9 meters from the ground. But you can adjust this parameter by manipulating the arches. The use of a sectional design allows you to adjust the length of the greenhouse. Standard kits include materials for building a 4 or 6 meter greenhouse, and they cost from 800 to 1000 rubles.

    To create such a greenhouse, high-quality and durable Agrotex 42 fabric is used. It has proven itself well and has received recognition from gardeners throughout Russia. If you are going to lengthen the structure, then you can buy this kind of covering material for a greenhouse, the price of which is notable for its affordable price.

    This might be interesting! In the article at the following link, read about winter greenhouses.

    Greenhouse "Snowdrop"

    This greenhouse is a fairly new, but already popular model, which is available in four versions: 3, 4, 6 and 8 meters in length. The frame is made of PVC pipes 25mm in diameter. The kit includes non-woven fabric SUF-42, which acts as a covering material.

    Greenhouse "Snowdrop" is very popular and widespread in Russia

    The advantage of this type is that it is very light, so it can be quickly moved from place to place. In addition, such a greenhouse is very easy to install and protects plants well from ultraviolet radiation. Such a greenhouse costs only 700-750 rubles.

    If you liked the snowdrop greenhouse, then you should watch this video about the installation of the structure and the elements included in the kit:

    Selection of metal arches

    Depending on the budget allocated for the greenhouse, snow and wind load in a particular region, you can choose one of numerous types of material. It is not advisable to use a simple metal rod, since it can quickly break through geofabric and polyethylene, even quite thick ones. The most practical ones will be:

    • wire in PVC film;
    • tube with a cross section of 10 to 12 millimeters in a PVC sheath;
    • galvanized tube.

    The last option is the most expensive, so it is rarely used. This pipe is good for a stationary greenhouse that will be used for many seasons in a row. Excellent corrosion protection is the main advantage. Thin wire up to 5 millimeters thick is suitable for a collapsible mini-greenhouse. PVC will protect the base of the product from rust, but after several installation cycles the shell peels off, and rust begins to eat away not only the arcs, but also the fabric itself. Such elements must be changed regularly. It is difficult to additionally secure the wire to the frame; it is better to thread it inside the “pockets” of the covering material for strength. A tube with a cross-section of 10 millimeters and a PVC coating is the most universal solution. It is durable and can be used for temporary collapsible shelters or stationary ones. It can be easily buried in the ground without a foundation in the form of reinforcement. It is precisely these arcs that standard clamps for attaching protective material are designed for.

    It is very simple to assemble an arc greenhouse with your own hands. It is enough to correctly calculate the length of the covering material, plan the location of the arcs and their height depending on the chosen crop. Tomatoes of various varieties of low-growing types will grow well in such a shelter. When choosing methods for attaching greenhouse arcs, it is necessary to take into account the need to move the entire structure and climatic conditions. Do-it-yourself production is a profitable way, since no special tools are required, and the materials are available at any hardware store.

    Stainless steel arcs for greenhouses

    The structure will not decompose, unlike wood. A greenhouse made from arcs is light in weight and will be easy to transport and fold. You can make such an arched greenhouse with your own hands in completely different lengths and heights.

    Greenhouses made from arcs with covering material have a number of advantages:

    • Economical design;
    • Durability;
    • Hygiene;
    • Practicality.

    In many gardening stores, arcs are available for sale individually, in a set, arcs that make up the frame, sewn in the form of an accordion, and also as a kit with film for assembling the entire greenhouse.

    To bypass the calculations of all the components of the greenhouse, you can use a set consisting of arcs, which consist of metal tubes coated in a polymer shell, connecting elements made of plastic. Such prefabricated sets of greenhouses can be from 2 m to 4 m. Before purchasing arcs and covering material, it is necessary to measure the dimensions of the beds. You also need to take into account the height of the future frame, depending on the height of the plant.

    Sequence of installation of greenhouse arcs

    A greenhouse is the same greenhouse, only in a slightly smaller version. Its essence is that it is quite small in height, which means it does not require a lot of costs for the source material. Arcs for a greenhouse can be fixed either into the foundation or directly into the ground.

    To form the foundation, it is best to use coniferous timber beams (dimensions 5x5 cm), which must initially be treated with an antiseptic. The greenhouse arches are attached to such a base using metal pins passing through the beams and secured on both sides with nuts.

    If the starting material was tubes made of metal or plastic, then such arcs are fixed to rods and attached to a bar at the top, ensuring the immobility and stability of this structure.

    It is also possible to install arcs directly into the ground. To protect the pipes from soil getting into them, their end faces are covered with wooden plugs.

    If the pipes are heated before the work process and then shaped into an arc, then when they cool down they will retain this configuration.

    But you can also use pipe benders for this or fill the pipe with sand, and also cover the end faces with wood plugs - an option for making arcs for a greenhouse yourself.

    The length of the arc for the greenhouse is calculated in such a way as to further ensure rational use of the internal space. Thus, for the calculation, the width of the bed for planting peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and other crops is taken into account.

    If we consider that the width of our future structure is ½ the diameter of the arc, then its radius can be equated to the height of the greenhouse.

    The required number of arcs is calculated based on the desired length of the structure. Be sure to maintain a distance of 50 cm between them.

    Simple DIY construction

    Wise gardeners are the first to enjoy the taste of fresh vegetables and herbs. As soon as the spring sun touched the fertile soil, experienced farmers build arched greenhouses. They are low tunnels stretched with film or agrofibre. The basis of the design is several greenhouse arcs stuck into the ground, arranged in one row. They install it in a spacious garden bed, which is abundantly heated by the sun.

    The design should be light in weight and mobile. If necessary, it is transferred to another place, without special heating.

    The main function of a greenhouse is to provide a comfortable temperature to the plants and protect them from frost. Thanks to its simple design, various types of seedlings are hardened. After all, in early spring it is quite warm during the day, while at night the thermometer can drop to a critical level. In order for the greenhouse to serve as a reliable shelter for plants, you need to create a high-quality frame. Let's take this matter seriously.

    Wall greenhouse

    During the years of widespread replacement of wooden window frames with plastic windows, many made wall-mounted greenhouses, which were installed on the south side of the house or outbuilding. Now you will have to make the frames for the greenhouse yourself, but it is not difficult. Both polycarbonate and film can be used in the design. In central Russia, such a greenhouse with glass frames could already grow greens, cabbage and other cold-resistant crops from April.

    To build such a greenhouse, you will need:

    • greenhouse frames;
    • bars with a thickness of 10 cm for wooden strapping;
    • croaker;
    • tarpaulin.

    A harness is made from the bars, to which the frames are attached with pieces of tarpaulin. This will make it easy to raise the desired frame for access to plants or ventilation. From below, stops are made for the frames, sewing the rail to the bottom bar.

    The side walls should be sewn up with a slab, and their lower part should be covered with earth.
