History and current diversity of offerings

The first buildings that were designed specifically for the winter preservation of fruit trees began to be built in France in the second half of the 16th century. Glass greenhouses of the familiar type appeared in 1599 in Holland. They were intended for plants brought from overseas colonies and were equipped with stove heating.

By the mid-19th century, glass greenhouses had become a necessary addition to the gardens of the bourgeoisie; and in France there was even a fashion for greenhouse living rooms. By this time, a division of buildings according to functionality had developed.

Greenhouse

It is intended for growing exotic heat-loving flowers and trees. In fact, it is a closed ecosystem in which palm trees, oranges and orchids grow, and amphibians, birds and reptiles often live. Greenhouses take a long time to build and are occupied gradually; Depending on local conditions, they can be heated and have a foundation. A heavenly place is often equipped with a recreation area.

Winter Garden

Initially, a special spacious extension to the residential building was allocated for the winter garden; Many similar rooms have been preserved in country mansions in Britain and France. The winter garden is also filled with exotic plants, and birds and small animals enliven the atmosphere. If a pond is equipped in the winter garden, it is populated with decorative fish species.

A winter garden has always been an expensive undertaking. It created a recreation area and laid walking paths. During construction, a foundation was necessarily laid, and good lighting and heating were provided.

Greenhouses

Their purpose has always been purely functional, although in recent decades the attitude has changed. Previously, vegetables, flowers and berries were simply grown in a greenhouse, trying to make maximum use of the usable space; today ideas for a greenhouse as a recreation area are becoming popular.

Manufacturers offer owners a variety of (and relatively inexpensive) ready-made models. Their design is functional and thought out to the smallest detail, but is a standard product. They are made of metal, plastic and glass, and can only be used as decoration for certain landscapes.

Homemade greenhouses and greenhouses are more varied in design; among them there are original developments. The advantage of such buildings is quick construction and savings. In general, they can hardly be called a decorative part of the garden, given that many do not have a foundation and can only be used in the warm season.

If you want to decorate your site with a building that is as decorative as a gazebo, you should think about ordering a permanent model that is suitable specifically for your garden. An equally elegant decoration for any landscape would be the purchase of an English-style greenhouse, a recognized standard among greenhouse buildings.

Form, design and additions

A greenhouse can become an important design detail of a site. Its shape is chosen based on the general style of the site. For fans of traditional solutions, a greenhouse in the style of the Victorian era or a Gothic cathedral is suitable. It is important to consider the garden environment around the greenhouse; the design should repeat the shape, color and scale of the glazing. Vertical lines can be emphasized with the help of a decorative fence, trellis, or thuja planted nearby.

Briefly about the main thing

The first greenhouse buildings, which appeared at the end of the 16th century, a hundred years later spread throughout Europe and became a familiar feature of the rural landscape. The English greenhouse is a special type of structure. It is distinguished from the usual greenhouses by its design features: a characteristic roof, high walls, original glazing, the presence of a vestibule and additional greenhouses on the sides.

Traditional Chelsea greenhouses were made of wood and glass. For modern summer (seasonal) options, a post-transom system is used. For a year-round greenhouse, an aluminum profile and double-glazed windows are suitable. All buildings look elegant thanks to their elongated shape, lancet windows and high foundation with a plinth.

Pyramid

Greenhouses in the form of a triangular pyramid allow for more rational placement of plants due to the originality of the design - for example, in several tiers. It is small in size, and to create humidity inside, just place a bucket of water in the center.

If desired, the cap can be made removable to ventilate the structure on a hot day.

Greenhouse made from profile pipes

A do-it-yourself greenhouse made from a profile pipe will last a very long time if handled responsibly. For arched structures, it is recommended to choose pipes measuring 40×20, quantity: 10, length 5.8 meters. For jumpers, 40 pipes are used, the length of which is 67 centimeters, dimension 20x20.

How to make a greenhouse with your own hands:

  • First, use pegs and ropes to mark the markings.
  • Prepare a hole 0.8 m deep, fill it with cement to the longitudinal base (15 cm high).
  • Connect the transverse pipes to the longitudinal ones using welding and angles.
  • Place a brick under the base; then place the pipes in the shape of arcs on top of the polycarbonate sheets, tracing them with a felt-tip pen. Cut out the resulting markings, leaving a margin of 1.5-2 cm.
  • After this, the first arc is welded to the longitudinal bases, using jumpers - the rest.
  • Secure the polycarbonate with self-tapping screws to the structure (the first sheet protrudes 15 cm beyond the structure).
  • Cut out doorways and windows.

Window frames

After replacing old wooden windows with new plastic models, you should not recklessly throw away the frames with glass. Such designs are ideal for arranging a full-fledged greenhouse.

Glass does not protect plants from sunlight, but this defect can be easily corrected by covering the glass with a special film. Double frames have particular advantages, between which heat is well retained.

Cons of polycarbonate

But when choosing polycarbonate, do not forget about the disadvantages of this material:

Polycarbonate is not durable. Constant exposure to sunlight makes the greenhouse more fragile.

There are a lot of fakes, if you are unlucky and you purchased low-quality polycarbonate, then you may be in big trouble due to its insufficient strength. A standard good quality polycarbonate sheet will weigh 10kg, if yours weighs less it could be a fake.

There may be problems with additional heating of the greenhouse. Avid summer residents, in order to extend the harvest year, install additional heating in them.

Choosing an installation location

An important criterion that should be given special attention is the installation location of the future greenhouse. For independent work, stationary models are most often chosen. The site selected for the location of greenhouses must meet a number of characteristics:

  • Do not contain underground currents located in the upper layers.
  • Be located far enough from latrines and livestock burial sites.
  • Should not contain karst voids.

Before starting work, the site is thoroughly cleared of debris and weeds. Check the acidity level of the soil and, if necessary, fertilize the soil until the desired values are obtained. A similar procedure is not required if a concrete base is laid on top of the ground.

Geodesic dome

If you want to build an original greenhouse on your garden plot, consider building a geodome. Unlike rectangular structures, there is no need to orient the beds relative to the cardinal directions - the plantings will always be optimally illuminated.

The most difficult thing in manufacturing is the correct calculations, and the cost of materials will be small. You will need bars or metal pipes, as well as film or polycarbonate.
